Final Data Visualization/ Information Design Project

Revision

Timeline

This timeline work was mainly produced with the help of Photoshop and finalized in Illustrator. Many of the imagery elements have been adapted from open sources and incorporated into the final product. The minute details cannot be appreciated in the final draft and I decided to showcase them separate so they can be enjoyed individually.
Most of the image was traced in pencil in Photoshop and colored over using the original imagery color source to get realistic effects. Other works are simply sketched and painted over. Many of the works are a depiction of space and this clearly has been my own interpretation; really far from the outstanding works lingering in the internet. Although most of the imagery inspiration has been graciously provided from Google images and without further ado here is my humble timeline interpretation of Universal Time.

And here are the raw images...

Deck of Cards Based on a Representative Artist or Designer

I based my design on El Lissitsky approach to angles and double use of images; here are some examples of his work.

Poster for Pechakucha Night, Pensacola

Revision
After class review and outstanding feedback, I made the necessary changes to enhance the aesthetics of colors and font size.

I was aiming at the wondrous use of angles and how they can help visualize space at a grander scale. I experimented with the use of photography to get close ups of building angles and corners. The result is similar to the stop motion pictures in which the use of small models and maquette created the illusion of space. One of those examples is in Jason and Argonauts movie; a 1963 film where the use of perspective was crucial to convey size and awesome terror.

The pictures I used were taken with a Cannon DSLR camera. I scouted several places around campus, but finally settled for the Commons Cafeteria which have really good lighting. Here are some examples...

The picture I decided to use is this one...

Turn it around and voila! I also wanted  to convey airiness and "fun" by jumping in a precipice filled with bubbles similar to Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory bubble room.

PROJECT 2 - Teach a Martian to Tie a Shoe

This project turned out to be really fun and complex at the same time. How do you really teach an alien something completely new and hope "it" understands what you are trying to convey? Well, my two closest "aliens" were my daughter and my spouse...not too far from that quest I presume, and not soon enough I had a barrage of questions. First, my spouse did not completely understand what was I showing her, but after a few hints to get her impression, still did not understand.
I left that planet so fast and hoped no other aliens contact her to get any other impressions. I soon arrived on the hostile planet (daughters bedroom) and found a hostile species reluctant to observe my friendly missive. Without a ray gun (her car keys) this alien had no other choice but to observe the sign in the sky. Her reaction was paired with a "Whooouu" sound; something my sensors indicated to be pleasing and amusingly understanding. I got a thumbs up and several suggestions to complete the "tie" down of the shoe. And here it is...Enjoy!

Revised

After the critique, there were some more adjustments that had to be made in order to convey the idea clearly. Some of those were subtle like removing the bars from the beginning and end circle, and increase the size of "material's list" at the top, and the line across to denote what is needed. Also the "creepy" hand; indeed it was creepy.
